Here’s a fact that tells you almost everything about Katrina Kaif’s career: when she arrived in Mumbai, filmmakers didn’t want to cast her because she couldn’t speak Hindi. Two decades later, she’s one of the highest-paid actresses in India, with four Screen Awards, four Zee Cine Awards and three Filmfare nominations — and a beauty brand with her name on it.

The road there was strange even by Bollywood standards.

She was born Katrina Rosemary Turcotte on 16 July 1983 in Hong Kong, to a Kashmiri-origin father, Mohammed Kaif, and an English mother, Suzanne Turquotte. Her parents separated when she was young, and after that the family basically never stopped moving — China, Japan, France, Switzerland, Hawaii, finally England. There was no settled school life; most of her education happened at home with tutors.

Modelling found her early. She started at fourteen with a jewellery campaign, then worked in London under the Models 1 agency, shooting for brands like La Senza and walking London Fashion Week. That’s where filmmaker Kaizad Gustad spotted her, and in 2003 she made her film debut with Boom.

Boom flopped. Badly. And with the language barrier working against her, the sensible move would have been to go home. She’d come to Mumbai with her sister carrying about Rs 4 lakh between them, with a plan B already decided — if the money ran out, she’d fly back and rejoin college in London. Her sister returned. Katrina stayed.

Namastey London in 2007 is where the story turns. The film was a hit, she got a Filmfare Best Actress nomination, and suddenly the actress nobody wanted to cast was in everything — Welcome and Partner that same year, Race and Singh Is Kinng in 2008, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and New York in 2009. If you grew up on late-2000s Bollywood, she was simply unavoidable.

The decade after that produced the roles people actually associate with her now. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2011. Ek Tha Tiger in 2012, which kicked off the Tiger spy franchise with Salman Khan and turned into one of Hindi cinema’s most reliable money machines. Dhoom 3 in 2013. Then, later, the performances that changed how critics talked about her — Zero in 2018 and Bharat in 2019. Along the way she also did Telugu and Malayalam films, and Eastern Eye named her the sexiest Asian woman in the world three years straight, 2008 through 2010.

In 2019 she did something few of her peers had bothered with: built an actual business. Kay Beauty, her cosmetics line co-founded with Nykaa, has kept expanding across the Indian beauty market ever since and now eats up a growing share of her working life. It’s not a vanity endorsement with her face on it — it’s hers.

Her personal life, picked over by tabloids for fifteen years, eventually settled somewhere quiet. She married Vicky Kaushal on 9 December 2021 in a deliberately small ceremony in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, and the two have guarded their privacy ever since. On 7 November 2025 they had their first child, a boy. They took two months before telling the world his name: Vihaan Kaushal — “first ray of light,” and, film nerds noticed, the name of Vicky’s character in Uri: The Surgical Strike.

Her last release remains Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas from 2024, and through 2026 she’s stayed on a break. When reports surfaced in July claiming she’d been approached for a cameo in the Prabhas film Spirit, her spokesperson shut them down flat — inaccurate, misleading, no truth to any of it.

Then September 2026 happened.

Her first public appearance since becoming a mother — the Ambani family’s Ganpati celebrations, with Vicky beside her — should have been an unremarkable outing. Instead, social media turned it ugly. Insensitive comments about her postpartum appearance spread fast, complete with circulating before-and-after photos. The kind of pile-on that new mothers in the public eye know too well.

What happened next is why the moment made headlines beyond gossip pages. On the September 19 Weekend Ka Vaar episode of Bigg Boss 20, Salman Khan Angry on Trolls for Katrina Kaif became the story of the night — her Tiger co-star and a friend of two decades — went off on trolling culture, at length and visibly angry. He named no one. But he asked why people troll someone’s weight, their looks, their flops, kisi ke maa banne par — for becoming a mother — and told trolls plainly: aap apni upbringing dikha rahe ho. You’re showing your own upbringing. On the pregnancy point he was even more direct: everyone gains weight after pregnancy, she’ll get fit when she’s back in films, and until then let her be with her family.

He never said “Katrina.” He didn’t need to. Coming days after the Ganpati trolling, viewers, media and half of X read it as a defence of her, and the clips went everywhere.

There’s something fitting about that. The actress who once couldn’t get cast for her Hindi now has one of the industry’s biggest stars going to bat for her, unprompted, on national television. Whatever film she signs next will be scrutinized to death — but few careers in Hindi cinema have travelled this far from a failed debut, and she’s earned the benefit of the doubt.
